The Singles’ Night – The Meat Market

On Friday I went to a singles night in the nearest city. I went with 3 other women who had been to this particular club’s singles’ night before. I was assured that the club was always packed and that there are lots of good-looking men that go there. Unfortunately this was not the case. The standard of the men was definitely below par.

So no potential boyfriends there. To put it bluntly, it was like a meat market. The whole environment was sleazy. The men where looking women up and down and grabbing them. I saw more than one man get slapped in the face.

Even though from a dating point of view it was a total wash out, we did end up having a really good laugh and I made some new female friends too.

Message Me If You’re Into Scat- NO I MEAN JAZZ SCAT.

The radio station Jazz FM is collaborating with WhiteLabelDating.com, a sort of generic online dating service that works with individual websites for customised online dating. The Jazz FM dating service will feature the standard online dating features, such as instant messaging, status updates, member feeds, video dating and dating diaries.

The main thing to take away from this is that its a dating service designed specifically for the listeners of a particular radio station. Often people find they like to date people with similar music tastes, which is the whole premise of some online dating sites.

How do you feel about localised dating services like this as opposed to generic web-wide ones? It does help build on connections that are already established, and also adds a sense of community. On the other hand it could be chaotic if every service had an attached dating feature. Let us know in the comments section below.

Online Dating Tips – Getting the right sort of attention!

iStock 000003644536XSmall Online Dating Tips – Getting the right sort of attention! One thing I’ve learnt through online dating is there is such a thing as bad publicity. The same as if you were in a bar or at a party – what you are wearing and the first few things you say to someone create that first impression. So, online, your profile picture and personal statement do the same.  And there are many things you need to consider to ensure you are giving off the right impression. Continue reading

Study on Online Dating ‘Successes’: Date; Marry; or Engage?

Rachel Magee and Christopher Mascaro, students at Drexel, College of Information Science and Technology, along with their advisor, Dr. Goggins, have done some research into online dating success stories. Their aim was to more accurately interpret the concept of online dating ‘success’, as it is more of a subjective idea when you look at it. For instance, does it mean marriage, and long-term relationship, or a hook-up?

The study is titled “Not Just a Wink and a Smile: An Analysis of User-Defined Success in Online Dating”. It’s a study of a two week sample of success story data from the online dating websites Match.com; eHarmony; and OkCupid.

84% of users with ‘successful’ experiences with eHarmony were referring to marriage. That’s quite a majority. However, Match.com’s users were only referring to marriage 46.7% of the time, and OkCupid users 23% of the time. The possible results were ‘dating’; ‘engaged’; and ‘married’. OkCupid, which had the lowest results for marriage success, did have the highest percentile for ‘dating’ ‘success’.

These sort of figures could help you decide which online dating service is right for you. But alternatively, and perhaps more importantly, it also provides a good excuse to think about online dating success. Not only are success stories out there, but what do you want from online dating? I think it’s good to consider dating someone regularly a success on its own. If you want more, then great. But I think you should always try to see littler things as successes in their own right too. A lot of success definitely comes from online dating websites, which is awesome.

Tingle Mobile Dating Spreads

AppSocial Media’s mobile dating app, Tingle, is already the most popular mobile-only dating app in Canada. Now the app is launching in the US as well.

The app is billed as “the first online dating service in the world to combine realtime voice chat, safer location-based discovery, and powerful online matchmaking features in a single, easy-to-use iPhone app”.

It sounds a little same-y, but the voice chat and radar is a fairly new and unique innovation for the mobile dating app. This function allows users to quickly and discreetly voice chat when convenient, without the need to even exchange phone numbers. These voice chats work via the phone’s wi-fi or 3G connections, and as such don’t use up any of your precious minutes. You can save those for proper, full-on dates.

It’s an interesting feature, and something that’s bound to be picked up and copied by the other, more popular, media-wide dating websites. What do you make of it? Would you like to see Tingle’s features emulated on your dating website of choice’s apps? Or, would you like to see Tingle released here, in the UK. If they’re as successful in the US as they were in Canada, it’s certainly a possibility.

Cougar Proof – Toy Boy Dating

We’ve all seen TV shows like Sex In The City, or that one with Monica from Friends in (Cougar Town?). We all know about cougars. There are even dating sites for it that we’ve reported on in the past.

Marina Adshade, a professor at Dalhousie University, was put out by friends thinking she should only be dating old men, not hot young, men like myself. Because of this she dug up a Berkley study of Yahoo! Personal that proves educated and well-off women have the best dating options out of anyone in the ‘dating market’. Adshade summarised:

They [the authors of a new economics paper] argue that the significant increase in “Toyboy” relationships since 1980 (ones in which a older woman married a younger man) has been driven by the increase in female educational attainment relative to that of men. It seems that given increases in women’s earning potential some men, at least, are willing to forgo having a younger wife in favor finding an economically successful older woman who can provide them with financial stability.

She also added “who wants to be with a man who put such a high premium on youth when aging (for all of us) is completely unavoidable?” on men who go for young girls. This is pretty true for someone looking for an actual relationship. But it’s okay for the men in those types of relationships because they’ll be dead by the time their younger other half gets old anyway.

Essentially, then, older women who are independent and more well-off usually end up toy boy dating, just because. It’s a more education, more equal rights sort of thing. It used to be the norm that 40 year old guys would get with 15 year old girls in Biblical times after all, so let the ladies have a turn, geez.

Online vs Offline dating

I have recently been told by a friend that I should keep going out clubbing to meet a man rather than changing tack and using online dating sites. I’m sure many people prefer meeting men ‘the old fashioned way’ but I don’t. I just don’t like meeting people in pubs and clubs, because (and I don’t think that this is just me) I don’t make the best choices when I’ve been drinking.

I have been accused of being too fussy when it comes to men, as I have a list of must haves for all potentials. I believe that the important things to consider when looking for a partner are interests, food preferences and TV and film preferences as these are some of the things that make up a relationship. I think that the chances of me walking in to a night club and finding that man who hates football and reality TV, loves Indian food and wants to relax at the weekend by watching old sitcoms like the Good Life and Porridge is pretty remote.

Since the start of this year I have found more men that fit this description than in the last decade of going to clubs and swapping numbers. Grand total for the year: 1. This is why I think that online dating is for searching and offline is for getting to know someone.

Unattractive Names

You shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but names can also tell us a lot about someone. Who called Dennis isn’t going to be a menace? It turns out names can play an important role in the online dating experience.

A study by Psychologists at Humboldt University, Berlin, tested how often online daters would open from people with certain sorts of names. English names. The results should mean something, as messages from these ‘suitors’ were sent to 47k people online. Some names, like Kevin, Dennis, Chantal or Justin were associated with troublemakers, and were not pursued. Good names were also found, which include Alexander, Charlotte, Emma, and Hannah.

Do names matter to you at all? Do you have a troublemaker’s name? Is it well-deserved? Let us know in the comments below.

LatinEuro Notices Trend in Big Breasts

LatinEuro is a Miami based ethnic dating website. They’ve noticed that women with big breasts are quite popular with their straight male and lesbian users. I noticed today that bacon sandwiches sell really well. Give me a f*!$ing pat on the head.

‘Girls with big breasts outperform other Latineuro dating categories such as, “Girls with Beautiful Faces,” “Girls in Bikinis,” “Athletic Girls, ” “Black Girls” and “White Girls,”‘ says the website’s press release. So I guess if they have nice breasts, but an awful face, then that’s grand. Also, what is with the ‘girls in bikinis’ category anyway? Do they literally never wear anything but bikinis? That doesn’t even make sense.

Some of the breasts featured on the website are implants. Vania Santos, the website’s director, said “the fact that many are are implants do not seem to bother men”. I think they meant to say ‘most men’, though, as that’s quite a sweeping statement. However, the link to breast implants from this rise (if it is a rise) of breast-related online dating shenanigans is a valid link. The figures of people getting breast enhancing surgery is on the rise on a yearly basis, with over 300k being done in 2011. That’s a lot of breasts.

So what do you think? Do you like breasts? Are you bothered by breast enhancements? Do you think this is a new thing? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
