Buying a Christmas Present for Your Partner
Have a happy Christmas! Or, whatever else you may celebrate. Or, just have a nice day, if you don’t celebrate anything.
As the popular country song says “Christmas Time’s A-Comin'” and is, in fact, less than a week away now! I’m sure most of you have already bought all of your Christmas presents, but there must people out there who are now hurriedly scrambling to do so. Plus, if you’re reading this you’re almost certainly a part of the dating or online dating world and therefore may well have a partner to buy presents for. Therefore, here is a rough guide to buying a Christmas present for your partner.
Really, if you happily buy appropriate gifts for your friends every year, you shouldn’t treat your partner any differently when picking their gift. Equally, maybe you’ve been in a relationship for years and have no difficulty with gifts for your partner, in which case this isn’t for you. But if you’re in a new relationship, perhaps you’re unsure. There are a few things to keep in mind: first, expensive gifts can make people feel uncomfortable as they can make them feel indebted to you. Equally, cheap/meaningless gifts can make people worry that you don’t really care very much. Nice middle grounds could include: a gift that isn’t worth that much money, but which you put a lot of thought into or a fairly meaningless gift coupled with a card with something rather thoughtful written in it.
But, of course, if you’re not the type to put much importance on Christmas presents, don’t make an exception for your partner. Why? Well, because, unless you’re going to keep it up from then on, you’re just presenting a false image of yourself, and also, if you give something really nice to your partner but nothing special to old time friends, it could well rub them the wrong way.
Whatever you do, don’t worry too much. If you buy somebody a gift that is a nice thing to do regardless of what it is. If somebody is very critical of you for not getting the perfect gift, then perhaps they need to assess their own values, but I hope that this at least is a helpful rough guide to the different approaches to Christmas present buying.
