Rachel Magee and Christopher Mascaro, students at Drexel, College of Information Science and Technology, along with their advisor, Dr. Goggins, have done some research into online dating success stories. Their aim was to more accurately interpret the concept of online dating ‘success’, as it is more of a subjective idea when you look at it. For instance, does it mean marriage, and long-term relationship, or a hook-up?

The study is titled “Not Just a Wink and a Smile: An Analysis of User-Defined Success in Online Dating”. It’s a study of a two week sample of success story data from the online dating websites Match.com; eHarmony; and OkCupid.

84% of users with ‘successful’ experiences with eHarmony were referring to marriage. That’s quite a majority. However, Match.com’s users were only referring to marriage 46.7% of the time, and OkCupid users 23% of the time. The possible results were ‘dating’; ‘engaged’; and ‘married’. OkCupid, which had the lowest results for marriage success, did have the highest percentile for ‘dating’ ‘success’.

These sort of figures could help you decide which online dating service is right for you. But alternatively, and perhaps more importantly, it also provides a good excuse to think about online dating success. Not only are success stories out there, but what do you want from online dating? I think it’s good to consider dating someone regularly a success on its own. If you want more, then great. But I think you should always try to see littler things as successes in their own right too. A lot of success definitely comes from online dating websites, which is awesome.

The premise for the blog GrannyIsMyWingman is simple: “My granny and me are both single ladies looking for laughs and love in the world of online dating.” But it carries a sort of comic and emotional genius that is far from simple, and more complex that one could ever plan. It is a blog of moments, and the bond between a woman and her grandmother as they both try to meet someone via online dating.

The duo is New Yourker Kayli Stollak, 24, and her grandmother, Gail, who lives in Florida. They offer each other encouragement, and condolences, where necessary. Usually hilarious quips, especially from Gail, litter the site. “Better he stands ya up now, than at the alter,” said Gail, after Kayli was stood up for a date.

An almost instant hit, with 30k views within the first month alone, the blog is going from strength to strength. Hopefully the blog will continue to delight its users, though with dates lined up for January, it might not be long before these witty gals find themselves a special someone, and hang-up the online dating hat. Hopefully it won’t be too soon, though, ladies.

Online dating success stories - we know they exist but what percentage of people actual share this information with either the dating company that helped them meet or even their friends and family? We’ve all heard an internet dating horror story I expect – women returning from the toilet with their skirt tucked into their knickers, dates obsessing over their ex’s and exaggerated online dating profiles.

But hang on a minute… what about those internet dating success stories? What about those who find love after meeting through online dating, at a singles event like speed dating or on a singles holiday?

Research into British behaviour suggests that only 2/10 of us let others know when they have had a good experience, but this rises to a whopping 7/10 who want to shout from the rooftops when they have endured a bad experience with anything. Typical Brits – we never complain to those responsible but grumble to all of our friends and family – we’re just too polite!

It seems that online dating is just the same.

Whist many want to share with the world their disastrous date, those who find ‘the one’ are content with keeping their life-changing experience all too quiet. Is it because we’re still worried about the stigma of meeting someone via a dating service?

Smart Dating UK would like to encourage you to share your dating success stories with others by offering £50 to any story we use for PR. If you’ve got a story but don’t want to be named or any publicity, that’s fine, please still share your story by adding a comment below. If you don’t want to share a story tell us why?
