Last weekend, I had a date with a man who while chatting on the internet and the occasional phone conversation seemed nice. We had exchanged emails about likes and dislikes over the last few weeks and we agreed to meet up.

This is how the date went. We met at the place we’d agreed upon. I had arrived earlier than him as I wanted to see if I could see him before we official met so I could form an opinion of the guy in private. This man came along swaggering and I said to myself ‘please don’t let that be him’ and as is my usually fate, it was him. So… Mr A is in his late 30′s, so not exactly an oldie but within 10 minutes of us saying hello he was telling me that he had a bad back (etc etc etc). I started to think that he may be older than he was telling me. He seemed to have a world weary attitude about everything, and although I’m very nearly 30 myself, I still have the outlook and attitude I did when I was a student 10 years ago.

I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that he was just a bit tired and that he would start to pick up once we got into a decent conversation. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. As I said earlier, we had been exchanging emails about our likes and dislikes. I made it very clear that I dislike spectator/team sports and that there was absolutely no point in talking to me about them as in my head it sounds like blah, blah, waffle, waffle, drivel, drivel. His entire conversation ended up being about which football team he supported, would I like to watch him play rugby one weekend, do I like golf, what did I think to some foreign player being sold to another team for a stupid amount of money, what was my opinion of some F1 teams car etc. I was starting to think that I was on a date with someone completely different from the man I had been messaging. Once I finally managed to get him to stop talking about sports, he started talking about his ex and how her and his family didn’t get on.

It’s never a good date when someone starts slagging off ex partners. Thankfully at this point in the conversation the food arrived so he shut up while he shovelled food into his face. As soon as I saw that he was eating the onions on his side salad and had ordered the garlic bread (which I had failed to notice at the time as I was too busy trying to block out the sports waffle by trying to remember the lyrics to Uptown Girl) I felt an almightly sense of relief. I realised that he obviously wasn’t expecting a kiss at the end of the night.

When the night was finally at it’s end I shook his hand said thank you for the date and dashed off in the direction of my car. I got a text message from him before I even reached the exit to the car park. When I got home I read this message: Im guesin dat u dnt wana go ot agin.

I hope he’s not expecting a reply.

On Friday I went to a singles night in the nearest city. I went with 3 other women who had been to this particular club’s singles’ night before. I was assured that the club was always packed and that there are lots of good-looking men that go there. Unfortunately this was not the case. The standard of the men was definitely below par.

So no potential boyfriends there. To put it bluntly, it was like a meat market. The whole environment was sleazy. The men where looking women up and down and grabbing them. I saw more than one man get slapped in the face.

Even though from a dating point of view it was a total wash out, we did end up having a really good laugh and I made some new female friends too.

A divorcing couple in Connecticut is being asked not just to give over money, property and custody rights, but also to exchange passwords for Facebook, eHarmony, and Match.com.

It’s no secret that social networking profiles can be used as evidence in court, and that they’re especially useful in divorce cases. However, never before has a Judge tried to issue a ruling that passwords for directly accessing this information be given over.

Not only does this violate Facebook’s Terms of Service agreement (not to give your password to other people), but it’s also a highly invasive breach of privacy. Luckily the Judge was wise enough to protect either party from being “fraped” (where someone posts a Facebook update on someone else’s account pretending to be them), as he ordered: “Neither party shall visit the website of the other’s social network and post messages purporting to be the other”.

What do you make of this ruling? It all seems a little odd, and a bit invasive. It has happened before that people have been forced to give over information included on their page, but asking for access to them seems to be overstepping the mark a little bit. Leave your comments in the comments section below.

So you’ve registered at an online dating site and are now about to create your online dating profile. But what do you say about yourself? And what profile picture do you possibly choose?

Online dating profiles often cause stress for many who have just started out on the internet dating scene. Whilst many are lost for the right words to pick to describe themselves or even struggle to find a suitable profile image, others simply tell some white lies.

Internet dating horror stories seem to crop up now and then about how people arranged a date thinking they were going to meet someone who they could click with. However, they find that they are completely different to what they expected, both in personality and interests as well as appearance.

This is often because many are self-conscious and shy about how they describe themselves, and so go overboard by stretching the truth a little too far.

Be honest in your profile description. Everyone expects you to ‘big-up’ your qualities to some extent, but white lies in your profile and a profile picture of you from ten years ago, will not only disappoint your date and show you to be dishonest but will also reduce your chances of meeting someone you’d be compatible with.

Help is always at hand. The Smart Dating UK YouTube channel has a collection of videos entitled ‘The ins and outs of online dating profiles’ which should be useful. Our very own online dating profile service, Perfect Dating Profile, also offers professional solutions for your profile writing and profile picture.

If you’ve met up with a date who was completely not what was described in their online profile, or indeed have lied in your own profile, let us know. Leave your comments below!
